Stop using the drive

The single most important thing: if you’ve lost files, stop using that computer or drive immediately. Deleted files aren’t erased straight away — they’re marked as space that can be reused. Every minute the machine keeps running, it may be writing over the very data you want back.

Don’t install recovery software onto the affected drive either. That alone has overwritten more lost files than anything else we see.

What’s usually recoverable

Accidentally deleted files and emptied recycle bins are often straightforward. Formatted or corrupted drives frequently recover well. Laptops that won’t power on are usually good news — the drive itself is generally fine and the failure is elsewhere.

Mechanically failed drives that click or grind are harder and sometimes need a specialist cleanroom, which we’ll arrange and quote before proceeding. A drive that’s been physically destroyed or professionally wiped is genuinely gone, and we’ll tell you that rather than charging to find out.
